Hudler Homestead

Take a peek into our day to day lives...

Most people like to call our home the Hudler Homestead, and I think it fits great. We strive each year to become more and more self-sufficient. Not only because you just never know what could happen (hello preppers!) but because we like to. We enjoy growing our food, and knowing where it comes from. We enjoy the taste of fresh fruit I picked with my own hands. We enjoy those fresh eggs everyday that just somehow taste so much better. We just enjoy it.

Welcome to our home. Here you'll find stories on our activities around the homestead, recipes from the garden, and tid bits here and there. I hope you enjoy my homestead journal.

The Hudler Homestead Journal

Yesterday we upgraded the chicken coop. We have a fairly large chicken run, about 25- 30 feet long if I had to guess. Our chicken coop is an old shed (actually my old playhouse as a kid). So, the coop is pretty big for the average person. Well, if you know chickens, you know they just destroy the area they are in. Grass is a thing of the past in that coop. Well I came across some great ideas on Pinterest (got to love that site) on chicken grass pads. Pretty simple and took my husband about 30 minutes from start to finish for one. You pretty much make a square, attach some 1/2 inch wire to the top, put some grass seed in the ground where you'll place the pad, throw some straw on and place the pad on top. Fill in the sides some, and hopefully watch the magic happen! In hopes, the grass will grow underneath and grow up through the wire, in return the chickens can eat the grass, BUT only as it comes up through the wire, allowing the grass to continue to grow without the chickens killing it by pecking up their roots. This will hopefully cut down on some feed for them for the summers too. If we didn't have a neighbor right behind us, we'd let our chickens roam free, but it's just not something we can do yet until we can get some fencing up down the road. Don't need the chickens eating the neighbors backyard flower beds. I will keep you posted on how the grass pad works! If it works well for us, we will be doing another one.

After finally figuring out how I wanted to do this page... I think I'll start like this with a small journal. So, to catch you up. If you've never been the the homestead.. you wouldn't know that we have two large gardens.. very large. We have 14 chickens at the moment, and 4 turkeys. This year we planted 3 fruit trees, and 6 berries - I can't wait to get some fresh fruit next year hopefully! We have big plans for many other things.. so stay tuned!
